Episode 20A - Elvira’s Haunted Hills (2001) & Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988)

A Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate! This month, The Late Night is very thankful as we welcome author, Amanda Headlee to our team. Amanda will be covering our horror news, and her newest publication, Till We Become Monsters, is a must-read!

We’ll also be celebrating the coming out of Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira) and her partner of nineteen years, with Axis and Moaner re-watching Elvira’s Haunted Hills (2001), and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988). During our commentary, we referenced Matt Baume’s Interview with Elvira; Cora Harrington's lingerie blog and book; Karolina Laskowska and the Underpinnings Museum; and Stuart Semple's project making formerly exclusive colors publicly available.

Finally, since we’re re-watching Elvira films, Axis thought it would be most appropriate to follow in Cassandra Peterson’s footsteps and show support for AIDS patients, specifically the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Episode 19B - Tales of Halloween Watchalong

This is a continuation of The Late Night’s October 2021 episode.

Episode 19A - Tales of Halloween (2015) & Trick 'R Treat (2007)

Welcome back fellow Late-Nighters! This year, Axis and Moaner decided the best way to celebrate Halloween was to do some anthology horror films. What could possibly be more Halloween and Horror-Anthology than the pairing of The October Society’s Tales of Halloween (2015) and Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘R Treat (2007).

In contrast to Trick ‘R Treat, (due to the insane amount of talent and directors featured in the film) re-watching Tales of Halloween reminded Moaner of Saturday Night Live’s Rap Video comedy skit. For those who haven’t seen the late George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (which played throughout Tales of Halloween), you can view it as it is part of the public domain.

Moaner and Axis also thought it would be neat to show fans what an old-school Halloween Safety Educational Video from Centron looks like which you can view here. Here, you can watch the first Sam cartoon, that creator, Michael Dougherty animated back when we was a student at NYU. Also, if you enjoyed Trick ‘R Treat but haven’t purchased a copy in several years, Moaner recommends getting the Shout Factory edition and watching the deleted scenes (they really do add a different layer to the film). Finally, for those who miss actress, Samm Todd - who played the character of Rhonda, you watch her latest interview at Scares That Care 2021 with journalist, Todd Staruch, The Horror Nerd.

The Safe Room V: Live from Axis' Car!

Moaner and Axis kick off Fall 2021 by broadcasting together for the first time EVER. That’s right, Moaner and Axis were physically adjacent while creating an episode of The Late Night: A Horror Podcast. No expense was spared for this momentous milestone event, as the choice of broadcasting location was the prestigious and luxurious comfort of Axis’ front passenger seats outside a little cottage in Maine in the middle of the night!
