Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply to Moanaria’s Fright Club Workshop?
After reading Moanaria’s Terms and Conditions, you can apply here!

How long does the Fright Club Writing Workshop go for?
Normally, Moanaria’s Fright Club Workshop goes for ten consecutive weeks. However, it is also possible that a program is structured so that there is a recess period and the result is ten non-consecutive weeks. In either event, the participant will be well aware of the situation.

How does Fright Club meet?
Fright Club meetings convene online, via Skype, FaceTime, or another telecommunications application.

How often do workshop participants meet online?
Once per week during a time that everyone has agreed upon. However, it should be noted that the group of ten will be broken-down into two sub-groups of five. So, unless otherwise noted, there will be two opportunities to attend a weekly meeting.

How long do meetings last?
It depends, but it normally takes around an hour to review the last week’s prompt and then discuss about the next week’s prompt. After those matters are settled, participants are free to hop off a call. However, Fright Club is a writing group that encourages socialization so sometimes a call can also go longer than an hour in an unofficial capacity.

What if I have questions about a weekly assignment, or Fright Club, outside of the meetings?
You can always contact the Online Writing Group Director at Moanaria.site@gmail.com.

What programs are used in Fright Club?
Currently, Submittable is used for uploading and critiquing work, and Skype is used for weekly online meetings.

How often should I email Moanaria to see whether or not I’m next on the list?
Preferably as seldom as possible. Moanaria maintains an applicant list, and is interested in adding as many new members as it can. However, it needs time to add new members.

WHY!? I applied weeks ago, why hasn’t Moanaria accepted my application?
“Good food isn’t fast, and fast food isn’t good!” When Moanaria was founded it had over 200+ applicants. We process twenty members at a time, and every writer receives an analysis letter at the conclusion of the workshop.

If accepted, what’s the word-count for the assignments I’ll be expected to turn in?
The following are the word-counts due for each weekly assignment in Moanaria’s Fright Club Workshop:
Week 1 - 0 words.
Week 2 - 500 words.
Week 3 - 500 words.
Week 4 - 1,000 to 2,000 words.
Week 5 - 1,000 to 1,500 words.
Week 6 - 2,000 words.
Week 7 - 1,000 to 2,000 words.
Week 8 - 1,500 to 2,000 words.
Week 9 - 1,000 to 2,000 words.
Week 10 - 3,500 to 4,000 words.

Why am I required to pay a deposit fee?
Punctuality and the ability to meets deadline are the most sacrosanct elements to being a successful writer. Likewise, the deposit is essentially a monetary deterrent to ensure that members complete their work and attend meetings regularly.

What happens if I miss a meeting, or fail to turn in a critique and/or assignment on time once?
As the workshop is only ten weeks long, and everybody is paying to be a part of the program, it’s crucial that everyone do their part. If you fail to attend a single meeting, or fail to turn in an assignment, or critique - once - you will forfeit your deposit. Furthermore, should you be accepted into a future, or subsequent, Fright Club workshop, one of the qualifications to that acceptance will be that the monetary amount you will be asked to deposit will be assessed higher. In short, it pays to be punctual.

What happens if I miss two or more meetings, critiques, or assignments?
You will be expelled from Fright Club without a refund, and you may not re-apply for at least a year.

Does Fright Club end after the workshop ends?
When you complete the workshop successfully you will be added into a private group of authors consisting exclusively of former Fright Club Workshop participants. The community sometimes does group exercises together.
